CFP – Posthuman Joyce

Call for Submissions: PostHuman Joyce: Machines, Informatics, Technology (edited collection)

“In conception and technique I tried to depict the earth which is prehuman and presumably posthuman.” (Joyce, discussing “Penelope” in a letter to Harriet Shaw Weaver, 8 February 1922, Letters 1:180, Selected Letters, p. 289)

Essay proposals are invited for a collection entitled Posthuman Joyce: Machines, Informatics, Technology. The relation between Joyce and cyberculture has garnered increasing attention within Joyce studies, but Joyce’s relation to the posthuman is not often addressed. The posthuman is itself a varied concept: it encompasses the three “waves” of cybernetics—the homeostatic, the reflexive and the virtual; it includes the amalgam of the human being and mechanical and/ or electronic devices; it also includes a thoroughgoing critique of the ideal of disembodied information that would make the seamless union of the human being and intelligent machine possible. The essays in this volume will explore all facets of the posthuman in its relation to Joyce and Joyce studies. Leer el resto de esta entrada »

Descanso de 15 minutos

Una nueva convocatoria de un congreso sobre ecocrítica:

Environmental disciplines have recently gained prominence due to the potentially devastating consequences of climate change: increasing natural disasters, the greenhouse effect, temperature variations, changing sea levels, etc. Such issues have raised awareness on the necessity for a drastic change in thinking. Ecocriticism—along with other green disciplines dealing with the relationship between society and the environment—places nature as the center of the intellectual debate. As Kate Rigby states, “culture constructs the prism through which we know nature.” Reading Nature Conference aims to explore from a critical perspective how such a prism is constructed. International reputed experts, along with young scholars will examine the way in which different notions on nature and the environment are conveyed in cultural manifestations. - Call for Papers -
18th June 2011
University of Liverpool

Keynote Lectures from: Professor Adam Roberts (Royal Holloway, University of London), Mr Andy Sawyer (Science Fiction Foundation Collection Librarian; Director of MA in Science Fiction Studies, University of Liverpool)

CRSF is a postgraduate conference designed to promote the research of speculative fictions including, but not limited to, science fiction, fantasy and horror.

Our aim is to showcase some of the latest developments in this dynamic and evolving field, by providing a platform for the presentation of current research by postgraduates. The conference will also encourage the discussion of this research and the construction of crucial networks with fellow researchers. The University of Liverpool is a leading centre for the study of speculative fiction, being home to the Science Fiction Foundation Collection, and is thus ideally suited to such a cause.

This year we would like to focus on encouraging postgraduates to network with others in their field, and related areas, whilst also demonstrating the depth and breadth of research currently being conducted into speculative fiction. Leer el resto de esta entrada »
