ASEBL Journal – ethical readings in literature

leave a comment »

La revista ASEBL llama al envío de ensayos sobre ética y literatura. Aquí copio el CFP:

ASEBL Journal, http://www.stfranciscollege.edu/academics/Publications/ASEBL , is looking for short, critical, analytical (possibly reflective) essays for upcoming issues.

Mission of ASEBL: To engage in the study, analysis, explanation, and public discussion of ethical behavior, as it is manifested, particularly, in literature. This is a serious but modest, online journal: we are not trying to compete with the major academic journals. To see what has been published, best to go to the website and view past issues. If requested, arrangements can be made to have your submission peer-reviewed. Lee el resto de esta entrada »

Otro CFP de vampiros

leave a comment »

Hoy he encontrado una convocatoria de la Universidad de Hertfordshire, Reino Unido, sobre vampiros y no muertos. Aquí la tenéis:

CFP Open Graves, Open Minds: Vampires and the Undead in Modern Culture (Edited Volume and Special Journal Issue):

The irony of creatures with no reflection becoming such a pervasive reflection of modern culture pleases in a dark way. Since their animation out of folk materials in the nineteenth century, by Polidori, as Varney and in Le Fanu and Stoker, vampires have been continually reborn in modern culture. They have stalked texts from Marx’s image of the leeching capitalist, through Pater’s Lady Lisa of tainted knowledge, to the multifarious incarnations in contemporary fictions in print and on screen. They have enacted a host of anxieties and desires, shifting shape as the culture they are brought to life in itself changes form. More recently, their less charismatic undead cousins, zombies, have been dug up in droves to represent various fears and crises in contemporary culture.

Essays are sought for a book-length collection on the theme of the undead—vampires and zombies—in modern culture and for a parallel special journal issue. The aim of the book is to relate the undead in literature, art, and other media to questions concerning gender, technology, consumption, and social change. It will examine these creatures in all their various manifestations and cultural meanings. This is a continuation of the research project initiated by the ‘Open Graves, Open Minds: Vampires and the Undead in Modern Culture’ conference, held at the University of Hertfordshire, UK, in April 2010. The volume will be published in 2012 and launched as part of the celebrations to mark the centenary of Bram Stoker’s death. Lee el resto de esta entrada »

CFP – Cinema & the State-Tortured Body

leave a comment »

Collected Essays – Cinema & the State-Tortured Body

full name / name of organization: Mark de Valk – Southampton Solent University, UK
contact email: mark.de.valk@solent.ac.uk

Call for Abstracts – Deadline Oct 1, 2010

Drawing from Foucault’s notion of the ‘political technology of the body’ and the ‘spectacle of the scaffold’, the collection looks to explore the Sovereign’s power and control over the body through the cinema’s arguable co-option of the state’s political-military-corporate aims and goals.

Possible topics include, but not limited to: politicised cinema; body as socially constructed by corporate/military factions; political ramifications of torture; body under stress from state-sanctioned torture; hegemony, grotesque image of the body, state/corporate/military notions of identity and space, political technology of state punishment; Grosz’s notion of ‘re-inscribing the body’ as a means to challenge the Sovereign’s control and construction of gender.

Film examples: L’aveu, Interrogation, The Road to Guantanamo, Le Petit Soldat, The Battle for Haditha, Hunger, Rendition, Punishment Park, JFK, The Manchurian Candidate, Executive Action, Winter Kills, Standing Operating Procedure, Taxi to the Dark Side, Z, I Saw Ben Barka Get Killed, The Official Story, State of Siege, The Hurt Locker, Salo, Battle of Algiers, Death and the Maiden.

Will also consider any topics related to the subject matter.
