“A Vampire, a Troll, and a Martian Walk Into a Bar….”
– Call for Papers –
18th June 2011
University of Liverpool

Keynote Lectures from: Professor Adam Roberts (Royal Holloway, University of London), Mr Andy Sawyer (Science Fiction Foundation Collection Librarian; Director of MA in Science Fiction Studies, University of Liverpool)

CRSF is a postgraduate conference designed to promote the research of speculative fictions including, but not limited to, science fiction, fantasy and horror.

Our aim is to showcase some of the latest developments in this dynamic and evolving field, by providing a platform for the presentation of current research by postgraduates. The conference will also encourage the discussion of this research and the construction of crucial networks with fellow researchers. The University of Liverpool is a leading centre for the study of speculative fiction, being home to the Science Fiction Foundation Collection, and is thus ideally suited to such a cause.

This year we would like to focus on encouraging postgraduates to network with others in their field, and related areas, whilst also demonstrating the depth and breadth of research currently being conducted into speculative fiction. Lee el resto de esta entrada »

CFP: Futurist Theory and Fiction: Fear, Horror, and Terror(ism)

Ritual

Hoy he encontrado una convocatoria de un congreso interesante pero que tendrá lugar muy lejos, en Ontario, Canadá. Os copio el call for papers.

Interdisciplinary Graduate Student Conference 2nd Futurist Theory and Fiction: Fear, Horror, and Terror(ism) University of Guelph, Ontario.

Stephen King once stated: “everything we do has a history. No matter where you come in on any situation, you are not coming in at the beginning.” King’s observation diagnoses a primary function of horror fiction: to remind contemporary audiences of their placement within this historical, gothic continuum. Horror narratives may, as Robin Wood famously suggested, reflect “our collective nightmares” but this collective is by no means limited to the contemporary moment for fleshing out these nightmares. Horror implicates readers and viewers by exhuming the past—monsters return, bodies rise from graves, and ghosts haunt the present. Furthermore within the Gothic imagination new terrors lurk beyond our social and technological horizons.
The aim of this inter-disciplinary conference is to investigate the complex and diverse ways concepts of the future play out in the gothic genre. How do terror and futurity intersect?

This conference seeks papers that explore ways in which concepts of futurity intersect with horror narratives, or that analyze the implications of monstrous progeny. Forms of representation include cinema, literature, philosophy, psychology, sociology, and (geo)politics. Lee el resto de esta entrada »
